Kevin Tea is a journalist and marketing communications professional who by a strange quirk of fate is currently managing a small unit at his local police force. He was previously a manager on the Telework Europa forum on the new defunct CompuServe and worked on a four year European Commission project looking at how the then emerging Internet technologies could benefit the rurally disadvantaged - Euro-speak for those stuck out in the middle of nowhere. He maintains an interest in how cloud computing and Web 2.0 technology can benefit working practices and writes a blog at http://web2andmore.net. It is his ambition to live part of the year in Greece and blog from a taverna accompanied by a glass if ice cold Mythos and a plate of Calamari.
I live in Cumbria which surprisingly has more to it than the lumpy bits in the middle known as the Lake District. Located 800 feet up a fell I can see across the Eden Valley to the Lakeland ranges - weather and Global Wetting permitting - and in the summer can sit in my garden and feel sorry for the hoards of tourists stuck in traffic jams far below. More than a million people visit the Lake District every year but very few, thankfully, find their way to the area where I live except for the demented cyclists who do the coast to coast cycle ride every year. I say demented because from the Eden Valley to Hartside on the North Pennines there is a rise of about 1700 feet in a very short distance!
My inner alarm clock goes off between 5-5.30am which was great in the summer when my two Border Terriers were younger and I could be out on the fells within seconds watching the badgers return home and the deer drinking at the nearby beck. Now the terriers are riddled with arthritis and won't be with me for much longer so I am not getting the exercise.
I generally put between nine and 10 hours in at the "day job" depending on what thoughtless sod has booked afternoon meetings which I need to attend. Being an early riser and meetings generally being one of the least exciting aspects of my job I have to fight the temptation to fall asleep and start dribbling! On a positive note the team I manage has helped dramatically reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on the county's roads and in 2008 we had the lowest number of fatalities for more than 25 years. This year is following that steep downward trend.
Away from work I wear my underpants on the outside of my trousers and wear a cloak and become SuperBlogger - well, I write a technological blog called Web2 and More which looks at how cloud computing and Web 2.0 social media technologies can change the way people work. The blog targets the self employed and small to medium sized enterprises as they need a competitive edge against larger rivals who probably have a IT support team.
When not surgically attached to a computer I dangle my tackle in the water - a euphemism for fly fishing - and enjoy cooking and reading about the culture of food. Anyone can cook from a recipe but I enjoy finding out how various cuisines developed from a cultural, social and geographic point of view.
Come 10-10.30pm I generally lose the will to live and take to my bed but I have been known to stay up later and even manage to communicate and even make sense on occasions despite my advancing years!
